Starting high school can be a very big transition for students, but for many 9th graders at John Fraser, the experience comes with a few unexpected realities. While Grade 9 students hear about John Fraser’s reputation, they aren’t always prepared for what daily life actually feels like here at John Fraser.

The level of academic intensity is a very big transition from middle school. Many Grade 9 students quickly realize that the workload in high school is a significant step up from the workload in middle school. Homework is handed out more often and teachers expect students should be keeping up without constant reminders. “In Grade 8, I didn’t study at all but, in high school I am studying non-stop” one student told me.

Another change is the environment itself. At John Fraser, students are surrounded by peers who are very highly motivated and focused on achieving strong grades. This creates a culture where doing well is the standard rather than it being praised. “Everyone here is always try-harding” a student at John Fraser said. “It kind of pushes you but it’s also stressful”.

Independence is another major adjustment. Teachers always provide guidance, but they do not closely monitor every assignment or remind students repeatedly about deadlines. Students are expected to stay organized and manage their own responsibilities without reminders. “The teachers aren’t chasing you for your work anymore,” one student said.

The transition socially can also be more complicated. While some friendships continue from middle school, many change as students meet new people and form different connections through clubs and sports. “I didn’t end up hanging out with my middle school friends, but I made friends through different classes and clubs I joined” one student said.

While many things surprise Grade 9 students about high school, it’s shown that the biggest struggle with the transition is what is expected of them, more responsibility with less pushing.
