“George, there is someone waiting to see you,” said my assistant. I went into the room where the person was waiting to meet me. As soon as I saw her, I knew it was something serious. The person waiting to tell me something was someone who I’d arrested two years ago, Elaina. She was one of the criminals who always knew what you were about to do and was two steps ahead of you. If she was back, willingly in my office, it must mean something really, really horrifying is about to happen.

Before I could say anything, Alaina starts talking, “Trust me, I don’t want to see you any more than you want to see me. But I have no other option but to be here. Yesterday afternoon, I received an anonymous letter, and it said to give it to you without reading the rest. At first, I thought it was a trap, and would frame me for a crime I didn’t commit. But then a picture fell out of the envelope, and that changed my mind. So here, take it. Here is the letter.” Confused, I took the letter from her, and started to read it. “You may leave,” I said to her.

I read the whole letter, and immediately realized the seriousness of the situation. I got up and immediately went over to my partner and showed it to him. The letter gave the information of a robbery, one that was well-thought out and would impact millions of people all around Canada.

The letter told me about every little detail of the robbery, from the exact time it would start, to the material of the masks the robbers would wear. The one thing I didn’t understand is how the person writing the letter knew all of this. Based on the details of this letter, the robbers seem to know what they are doing, so how could they accidentally leak so much information? Also, what was the picture that fell out of the envelope? The one that convinced Elaina to come to the police department? My partner finished reading the letter, and he said that we should get ready and go to the bank that was going to get robbed.

Oh, I forgot to say that this robbery hasn’t happened yet. The letter was a warning for a robbery in the future. I suited up and went towards the site of the robbery. I had officers swarming the area of the building, hiding so that when the robbers come, they won’t be able to see them. My partner was inside, in disguise. However, I felt as if we were missing something. Something was definitely off. I decided to call my assistant and tell her to track Alaina.

A few minutes later, just as described, a black sedan parked behind the bank. The people inside got out of the car and went into the back through the back door. Just then my phone rang, and it was my assistant. “George!!” she screamed, “Alaina gave you that letter to distract you! She is …” There was a loud noise and the phone call ended.

My partner, Luke, spoke to me through the radio and said, false alarm. They are employees here. I know that for sure, I confirmed it.” I replied, “My assistant called and told me that Alaina sent the letter as a distraction and then the phone call ended. I’m going to go back to the police station and I’ll meet you there.”

I rush back to the station and when I go inside, everything seems normal. The only thing that seems off is that my assistant is not anywhere in the station. I ask other officers, but no one seems to know where she is. I go back into my office and see a note from my assistant. It only had 5 words. Trap, Ice Rink, Alaina, Hurry. The ice rink is only 3 minutes from here! I ran all the way there, and when I got there, I found my assistant putting handcuffs on Alaina! My assistant told me that Alaina had planned to blow up the ice rink, and take the gold underneath. Luckily, my assistant had figured out that the letter was just a distraction and there was really no robbery. Alaina was planning something big.
